The Bachelor of Music (B.M.) program offers undergraduate students a career-oriented, professional education in music. Students can specialize in areas like composition, jazz, piano, strings, theory, voice, or winds and percussion. The B.M. program provides opportunities to learn from distinguished faculty, perform in premier ensembles, and engage with cutting-edge music history and theory courses. About 60% of the curriculum focuses on music, combining rigorous training with an emphasis on diversity, community involvement, and entrepreneurial skills. Graduates leave prepared for advanced musical careers or top-tier graduate programs. Though demanding, students can pursue a dual major—many combine the B.M. with a Bachelor of Music Education by extending their studies by one semester.
Exceptional pianists worldwide come to UMD to train under our esteemed piano faculty. The piano program is highly selective, offering degrees in both solo and collaborative performance. Students enjoy diverse learning and performance experiences designed to push their artistic boundaries. Beyond weekly studio classes, they gain insights from masterclasses with celebrated guest artists like Gilbert Kalish, Boris Berman, Richard Goode, Joseph Kalichstein, and Julian Martin. Pianists play a vital role in the School of Music, frequently collaborating with peers in voice, strings, and winds through chamber music, large ensembles, and opera productions.
