The Bachelor of Music Education (B.M.E.) program prepares undergraduates for careers teaching music in K-12 schools. Our distinguished faculty and strong focus on teacher development make this program exceptional. Through this curriculum, you'll develop both outstanding musical performance skills - as B.M.E. students participate in the same lessons and ensembles as performance majors - and the ability to thoughtfully approach teaching in diverse educational settings. The B.M.E. is an intensive program primarily intended for those pursuing music education careers. However, students can pursue a dual degree in both music education (B.M.E.) and music performance (B.M.), which requires just one extra semester (totaling four-and-a-half years) as both degrees are earned concurrently. This dual path may appeal to students wanting maximum performance opportunities during their time at the University of Maryland. Dual degree candidates complete eight semesters of classes, private lessons, and ensemble work, followed by a ninth semester devoted entirely to student teaching.
The University of Maryland attracts vocalists globally to study with our renowned faculty, which includes performers who have starred with premier opera companies and orchestras worldwide. Our voice and opera programs offer thorough training for professional performance careers, teaching positions, arts administration roles, and other music-related professions. The voice and opera faculty consists of internationally acclaimed performers, masterclass clinicians, and specialists, including alumni of top-tier opera houses and concert venues. United by a collaborative spirit and varied professional experiences, our faculty foster an environment of artistic excellence and mutual support. The division regularly hosts joint recitals, masterclasses, and special events that bring students and faculty together.
