The Bachelor of Music Education (B.M.E.) program prepares undergraduates for careers in K-12 music teaching through expert faculty guidance and comprehensive teacher training. As you progress through this curriculum, you'll develop both exceptional musical performance skills—B.M.E. students participate in the same lessons and ensembles as performance majors—and the ability to thoughtfully approach teaching in diverse settings. This intensive program primarily serves those focused solely on music careers, though pursuing a dual degree in music education (B.M.E.) and performance (B.M.) is achievable with just one extra semester (totaling four-and-a-half years) as both degrees are earned concurrently. The dual degree option provides maximum performance opportunities during your studies at the University of Maryland, involving eight semesters of coursework, private lessons, and ensembles, followed by a ninth semester dedicated to full-time student teaching.

Our program cultivates outstanding musician-educators who enjoy remarkable career success, boasting a perfect job placement record with graduates in high demand across Maryland and nationwide. We develop thoughtful music educators and well-rounded musicians for leadership roles in varied educational environments, believing that teachers advance the field through musical excellence, research, and inquiry. Our distinguished faculty members integrate their internationally recognized research and innovative scholarship directly into daily student instruction.
