The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in linguistics offers undergraduates comprehensive training in both theoretical frameworks and cutting-edge experimental methodologies. At Maryland, linguistic studies incorporate diverse investigative approaches. These include analyzing individual language structures, examining cross-linguistic grammatical patterns, observing typical and atypical child language development, investigating cognitive language processing, and exploring neurological language representation. These multifaceted approaches collectively illuminate our core focus: understanding the universal human language capacity that binds Maryland Linguistics research. Our department's investigations encompass syntax, semantics, phonology, language development, computational approaches, psychological linguistics, and brain-language relationships. We actively encourage undergraduate involvement in faculty-led research initiatives, which proves particularly beneficial for students considering advanced academic pursuits. Such research engagement may also culminate in honors thesis opportunities for linguistics majors.
High school students and students with fewer than 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours of university-level credit beyond secondary school should apply as freshman applicants.
