To graduate, students must complete at least 122 credit hours. Journalism accreditation standards mandate that around two-thirds of coursework should focus on subjects outside journalism and communications. The University of Maryland's Philip Merrill College of Journalism follows this national guideline. Specifically, out of the 122 required credits, journalism majors need to complete 42 credits in journalism courses (numbered 100 or higher). The remaining 80 credits must include at least 65 in liberal arts courses. Those specializing in broadcast journalism must complete between 9 and 18 additional credits, varying by course selection.
At the Philip Merrill College of Journalism, we provide hands-on professional training. Students gain practical experience by reporting from key locations like Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Annapolis, and College Park through our Capital News Service. They tackle nationally significant investigations at the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism and develop sports journalism expertise at The Shirley Povich Center. Data journalism is integrated throughout our curriculum and reinforced in our flagship programs. Our alumni are recruited by leading media organizations across the nation.
