The Immersive Media Design program embodies the University of Maryland's commitment to bridging STEAM disciplines—merging scientific and technological studies with creative and performing arts. This program ensures students gain proficiency in both the technical and artistic aspects of immersive media. Immersive media captivates audiences by stimulating multiple senses, fostering interaction with digital surroundings. While augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are common forms, the field also includes projection-based installations, tactile interfaces, and audio experiences. Participants will master designing, developing, and creating diverse immersive media formats, from haptic and sound-based systems to VR and AR applications. Through individual and collaborative projects, students craft works aligned with their skills and professional aspirations. The program offers two specialization tracks—Computing or Emerging Creative—allowing students to concentrate on either the technical or artistic dimensions of immersive media.
