The doctoral degree is granted when candidates demonstrate exceptional scholarly achievement and the capability to conduct autonomous research in chemical engineering. This advanced degree focuses on developing expertise and competencies to prepare graduates for careers as independent scholars. It's particularly suited for individuals pursuing professional paths in research, academia, or specialized technical roles. The former Chemical and Biochemical Engineering and Civil and Environmental Engineering departments have combined to form the new Department of Chemical, Biochemical, and Environmental Engineering (CBEE). UMBC's CBEE program now belongs to an exclusive cohort of institutions housing both Chemical Engineering and Environmental Engineering within a single department, creating unique opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration between these complementary disciplines.
