The early childhood undergraduate certification program offers two distinctive aspects. Firstly, every undergraduate student is required to pursue an academic major alongside the certification requirements. Popular major choices include Psychology, American Studies, and Sociology, though students have also selected fields like English, Mathematics, Dance, and other areas. By opting for an Interdisciplinary major, aspiring early childhood educators can tailor their studies to aim for leadership roles like childcare center administration or to specialize in particular interests such as arts integration or environmental education in early learning. At UMBC, both undergraduate and graduate students in early childhood education follow a curriculum that qualifies them for Pre-K through third grade teaching certification. While numerous candidates intend to teach in public school settings, others are training for roles in private institutions or childcare facilities, where they may pursue both teaching and administrative responsibilities.
