A Bachelor of Science in Physics prepares students for direct entry into professional careers or serves as a foundation for graduate studies. The department provides physics programs at the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and PhD levels, backed by more than 20 tenure-track faculty members. Additionally, the department fosters a dynamic and expanding research program, focusing on key areas: Astrophysics (studying active galactic nuclei, relativistic jets, and cosmic large-scale structures) Atmospheric Physics (exploring radiative transfer, Lidar technology, satellite remote sensing, and atmospheric dynamics) Condensed Matter Physics (investigating THz science, molecular electronics, nanomaterials, and hybrid material interfaces) Physics Education (emphasizing secondary education and collaborative/guided learning approaches) Quantum Optics and Information Science (advancing quantum computing and imaging technologies) As one of the fastest-growing physics departments nationwide, UMBC's Physics Department has undergone significant transformation over the past 15 years: Tenure-track faculty numbers have increased twofold Research faculty now exceeds 20 members PhD and MS programs launched in Physics and Atmospheric Physics Graduate student enrollment has surpassed 50 full-time candidates
