The Department of Geography & Environmental Systems stands out for its interdisciplinary approach, uniting faculty from varied backgrounds who share a collective purpose. Our current faculty's research explores diverse themes including earth systems science, ecosystem studies, human and urban geography, and the societal aspects of global change, while employing geospatial technologies across all research domains. While our academic pursuits vary widely, we maintain a shared emphasis on interconnected natural-human systems and how landscape patterns relate to human actions and environmental impacts - a unifying theme across our graduate programs. The department fosters collaborative research spanning local, regional, and global scales, recently gaining recognition through an AGU TV feature.
