UMBC's Music Department offers personalized guidance to help undergraduate students thrive as emerging musicians at a compact research university. Our accomplished alumni work as professional performers, music teachers, audio technologists, business owners, and researchers across the nation. Vocal Performance majors gain comprehensive training in solo and group performances featuring texts in principal European languages. Within a nurturing network of instructors, support staff, and peers, vocalists broaden their artistic and academic perspectives through individual coaching, regular recitals, specialized workshops, and ensemble repertoire studies. Voice instruction focuses on cultivating healthy, expressive, and technically sound singing within Western classical traditions. Students regularly showcase memorized works in department performances, adhering to stylistic conventions of studied compositions. The Vocal Performance program systematically introduces diverse classical vocal genres, including folk songs, Italian monodies, English lute songs, German lieder, French mélodies, operatic arias, plus solo selections from operettas, oratorios, masses, and cantatas.
