UMBC's instrumental music education students acquire hands-on teaching experience each semester, working with CUTTING-EDGE METHODS tailored for modern classrooms. A defining feature of the program is the weekly service-learning internship during their first two years, conducted in Baltimore City schools through the Baltimore Symphony's OrchKids initiative. This TWO-YEAR placement, where students collaborate with peers under expert guidance from both school mentors and UMBC faculty, offers an EXCEPTIONAL higher education experience that helps future music educators: develop profound understanding of ACTUAL classroom dynamics, challenging them to establish stronger teaching fundamentals than typical brief practicums at other institutions foster significant CONNECTIONS with students, creating richer educational experiences for both UMBC participants and the youth they serve.
