History majors explore a wide variety of courses covering the core concepts and methodologies of the field. As students progress, they can focus on particular themes, subjects, or historical eras through elective offerings. During their final year, they apply this knowledge to develop an original research project. The UMBC History Department features distinguished faculty who mentor students in refining their abilities as researchers, critical thinkers, and communicators. While engaged in scholarly work and professional organizations, our faculty prioritize student learning. Coursework spans diverse historical topics, with special emphasis on Public History, Global History, Political and Policy History, and the History of Inequality and Justice. Students also master fundamental historical research techniques. From introductory classes to advanced thesis work, our curriculum teaches how to locate meaningful primary sources, evaluate them critically, and craft persuasive arguments for various readers. Consequently, our graduates pursue careers both within and beyond history that utilize these transferable skills, including law, education, government service, and historical research.
