The Department of Africana Studies (AFST) equips students from all backgrounds with the analytical framework to examine, assess, and interpret the social realities shaping African diaspora communities across the United States, Africa, and beyond. The AFST curriculum encompasses diverse courses exploring cultural, economic, historical, political, psychological, and sociological dimensions of African-descended populations through multiple academic lenses. UMBC's Africana Studies program delivers an intellectually demanding curriculum designed to cultivate critical thinking, articulate writing, research proficiency, persuasive communication, and problem-solving skills. Employing an interdisciplinary methodology, AFST centers African perspectives while highlighting their global impact through cultural achievements, scientific advancements, and societal progress.
