Welcome to the Chemistry Department at the University of Maine. As the sole institution in Maine providing Ph.D. and M.S. programs in chemistry, we take great pride in our academic offerings. Our faculty and graduate students conduct diverse research across chemistry disciplines. With smaller research groups, we foster close collaboration between students and professors. Numerous teams work on interdisciplinary projects, creating chances to partner with engineers, materials scientists, biologists, and education researchers.

Most of our graduate students pursue Ph.D. studies, with first-year students typically receiving teaching assistant positions. Research assistantships become available, generally starting in the second year. We ensure continuous financial support for all students maintaining satisfactory progress until degree completion.
Wood Chemistry

Wood chemistry represents an expansive, interdisciplinary area concentrating on the chemical and biochemical properties of trees and derived materials like pulp and paper. This field relies heavily on analytical instruments to examine forest product composition and processing techniques. Our wood chemistry program stands unique among U.S. chemistry departments. We're pioneering techniques to isolate wood's primary components, enhancing their utilization for premium products and renewable energy solutions.
