Welcome to the Chemistry Department at the University of Maine. As the sole institution in Maine providing Ph.D. and M.S. programs in chemistry, we take great pride in our academic offerings. Our faculty and graduate students conduct diverse research across chemistry disciplines. With smaller research groups, we foster close collaboration between students and professors. Numerous teams pursue interdisciplinary projects, creating chances to work alongside engineers, materials scientists, biologists, and education researchers.

Most of our graduate students pursue Ph.D. studies, with all first-year students typically receiving teaching assistant support. Research assistantships become available, generally starting in the second year. We ensure continuous financial support for all students maintaining satisfactory progress until degree completion.
Theoretical and Computational Chemistry
Theoretical chemistry explores fundamental concepts that form modern chemistry's foundation, including chemical bonding, reactions, valence theory, potential energy surfaces, molecular orbitals, and activation processes. Computational Chemistry applies computer simulations to address chemical challenges, utilizing theoretical methods through specialized software to analyze molecular structures and material properties.
