Our faculty consists of committed, seasoned educators and investigators. Numerous members have formed cross-disciplinary partnerships with peers across campus departments, including the Frontier Institute for Research in Sensor Technologies (FIRST), the Forest Bioproducts Research Institute (FBRI), the Institute for Molecular Biophysics, the Maine Center for Research in STEM Education, and the Sustainability Solutions Initiative. Collaborative groups of UMaine professors, postdoctoral researchers, and students at all levels are exploring biomass conversion, environmental pollutant detection sensors, analogy-based teaching methods in chemistry laboratories, novel approaches to cancer biomarker identification, and miniaturized devices with applications ranging from genomics to biofuel catalyst screening. Below you'll find detailed research focus areas and their corresponding faculty members.
Surface Chemistry
This field examines chemical processes at surfaces, interfaces, and thin film materials. Scientists develop innovative materials and investigate molecular interactions with surfaces for diverse applications including catalysis and sensing technologies.
