Welcome to the Chemistry Department at the University of Maine. As the sole institution in Maine providing both Ph.D. and M.S. programs in chemistry, we take great pride in our academic offerings. Our faculty and graduate students participate in diverse chemistry research areas. With smaller research groups, we foster close collaboration between students and professors. Numerous teams work on interdisciplinary projects, creating chances to partner with engineers, materials scientists, biologists, and education researchers.
Most of our graduate students pursue Ph.D. studies, with all first-year students typically receiving teaching assistant positions. Research assistantships become available, generally starting in the second year. We ensure continuous financial support for all students maintaining satisfactory progress until degree completion.
Organic Chemistry
Organic chemistry focuses on studying the structure, characteristics, and transformations of carbon-containing compounds. These substances surround us—present in DNA, proteins, and peptides—and drive key U.S. industries like plastics, pharmaceuticals, fuels, coatings, and agricultural chemicals. Organic chemists specialize in precisely altering molecules to boost desired effects and target specificity while minimizing unwanted reactions.
