The Department of Modern Languages and Classics provides Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) programs in both French and Spanish, along with a Master of Arts (M.A.) in French featuring optional specializations in French Literature or North American French Studies. Designed through collaboration with University of Maine System campuses, the 30-credit M.A.T. programs in French and Spanish specifically address the educational needs of Maine schools. These programs deliver full-time academic year instruction for aspiring teachers and intensive summer institutes for current educators. Participants complete seven to eight courses (21-24 credits) covering language, literature, culture, and linguistics in their chosen language, plus required courses in language pedagogy (MLC 466/566) and teaching exceptional students (SED 402/500). Degree completion requires passing an oral examination and submitting a professional teaching portfolio demonstrating alignment with Maine's teaching standards and preparedness for K-12 language instruction. Certified French or Spanish teachers may choose advanced coursework in their primary language or pursue study of a secondary foreign language at the 400 or 500 level instead of certification-focused classes.
