Welcome to the University of Maine's Chemistry Department. As Maine's sole institution offering Ph.D. and M.S. programs in chemistry, we take great pride in our academic offerings. Our faculty and graduate students conduct diverse research across chemistry disciplines. With smaller research groups, we foster close collaboration between students and professors. Numerous teams pursue interdisciplinary projects, creating chances to work alongside engineers, materials scientists, biologists, and education researchers.
Most graduate students join our Ph.D. program, with first-year students typically receiving teaching assistant positions. Research assistantships become available, generally starting in the second year. We ensure continuous financial support for all students maintaining satisfactory progress until degree completion.
Physical Chemistry
Physical chemistry explores material structure and chemical reactions at subatomic, atomic, and molecular levels. Computational physical chemists employ mathematics and physics to create models explaining phenomena from protein folding to nanoparticle characteristics. Experimental physical chemists utilize advanced equipment like lasers, mass spectrometers, and microscopes to analyze chemical structures and processes. These investigations connect to virtually every chemistry field, spanning biological systems, nanotechnology, and environmental studies.
