The Graduate School of Biomedical Science & Engineering (GSBSE) provides a PhD program in Biomedical Science, which integrates biological and medical disciplines to advance health research for humans and animals. This program explores specialized areas including cellular and molecular biology, neuroscience, and toxicology, combining academic instruction with practical laboratory training and research opportunities. The GSBSE represents a collaborative effort among several leading institutions: The University of Maine, The Jackson Laboratory, Maine Medical Center Research Institute, Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory, University of Southern Maine, and University of New England. Enrolled students can select from over 150 faculty mentors across these prestigious research and academic centers. Course access and faculty interaction are facilitated through advanced video conferencing technology.
In their initial year, PhD candidates complete four foundational modules (BMS 625). Each student then follows a customized curriculum aligned with their research focus. Beyond core classes, first-year doctoral students participate in at least three laboratory rotations under faculty supervision, spanning two of the five partner institutions, with an optional fourth rotation available. Students finalize their dissertation advisor and research topic either during or after completing these rotations.
