The recreation sector stands as one of the globe's most varied and rapidly expanding industries, frequently overlapping with the tourism industry's global growth.
Our Parks, Recreation and Tourism (PRT) program equips students with specialized training for diverse career paths, including positions in parks and conservation areas, public and private enterprises, environmental nonprofits, and government resource agencies. The PRT curriculum's focus on blending natural, social, and management sciences mirrors the interdisciplinary approach needed to tackle recreation, tourism, resource planning, and environmental challenges.
Those pursuing Parks, Recreation and Tourism studies benefit from our prime location near coastal landscapes, mountain ranges, Acadia National Park, Baxter State Park, the Appalachian Trail, and Maine's tourism hotspots. Field trips to these locations offer exceptional chances for hands-on learning and professional observation during both academic and personal time. Industry professionals from various sectors regularly share insights through guest lectures, exposing students to diverse management approaches.
Our distinguished faculty members—both core and adjunct—bring substantial field expertise along with national and international recognition. Students can enrich their education through multiple avenues: summer programs, fieldwork, international studies, and participation in recreation-focused research projects that boost career prospects.
With intentionally limited class sizes, we foster close student-faculty relationships and personalized instruction. Dedicated academic advisors guide students through curriculum selection, career planning, and professional development.
Summer internships and cooperative education placements offer both academic credit and practical experience. The region's abundant internship options enable students to balance work and coursework when desired.
Our PRT faculty contribute more than sixty years of combined expertise in recreation resource management and research. Being housed within the Forest Management Department ensures students receive comprehensive training in natural resource stewardship.
