Forestry is a practical scientific discipline focused on stewarding forest ecosystems amidst growing social complexities. This rigorous profession combines Forest Ecosystem Science and Conservation, management principles, and communication expertise to sustainably conserve and manage forest resources, addressing society's escalating demands for goods, services, and environmental health. As one of Earth's most vital natural assets, forests purify air, enhance water quality, prevent soil erosion, sustain wildlife habitats, supply renewable materials for energy and construction, and create recreational spaces that improve human wellbeing. Globally, forests blanket 21% of land area, covering approximately one-third of U.S. territory, 90% of New England, and 89% of Maine—the nation's most densely forested state. Forestry professionals possess comprehensive knowledge for balancing natural systems and human factors within forest landscapes. The field demands diverse education: biological and physical sciences analyze intricate ecosystem relationships, social sciences examine human valuations of forest benefits, while management sciences align human needs with forests' sustainable capacities.
The SAF-accredited four-year program comprises 120 credit hours. Beyond university mandates in science, humanities, communication, and mathematics, the curriculum features specialized courses in forest biology, pedology, measurement techniques, cartography, resource assessment, conservation, ecology, silviculture, economics, policy, and administration. This integrated approach develops sustainable forest management strategies that balance ecological health with societal needs for wood products, wildlife preservation, outdoor recreation, and watershed protection.
