The Modern Languages and Classics Department faculty are dedicated to outstanding teaching, research, and community engagement, aligning with the University of Maine's Land and Sea Grant objectives. Our primary focus is delivering exceptional education to the College, University, and Maine residents. We continuously enhance our professional expertise and curriculum while supporting local communities and language educators across the state. As committed scholars, we engage in research that advances teaching methods, explores language-related cultural contexts, and generates new disciplinary knowledge.
As the University's leading resource for diversity education and cross-cultural communication, the Department of Modern Languages and Classics specializes in global language acquisition and cultural studies. Graduate programs include French and Spanish, with undergraduate majors covering French, Spanish, Romance Languages, and International Affairs. Students can pursue minors in French, Spanish, Professional Languages, or Classical Studies, with intermediate-level courses available in Arabic, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, German, Hebrew, and Latin. Beyond educating Maine's language instructors, the Department serves as a vital resource for international competency across all University of Maine degree programs, both in humanities and professional fields.
