Housed in the historic Maples building, the Philosophy Department provides a Bachelor of Arts program through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Students can explore a wide variety of philosophical topics through this comprehensive curriculum, which encompasses rigorous examination of human existence, culture, and our world. With roots tracing back to Ancient Greek traditions, philosophy forms the cornerstone of intellectual development. Course offerings span diverse fields such as environmental ethics, medical ethics, existential thought, political philosophy, logical reasoning, feminist perspectives, Eastern philosophies, language analysis, artistic theory, scientific inquiry, and philosophical history. The program structure ensures advanced coursework prepares students for graduate-level philosophical studies.
Students can earn a Philosophy BA or choose among three specialized minors: Philosophy, Ethics and Political Philosophy, or Environmental Ethics. Many philosophy students opt for dual majors, frequently pairing with political science, English, history, mathematics, or computer science. Philosophy graduates develop highly sought-after skills for careers in law, medicine, government, and other fields, including clear analytical thinking, creative problem-solving, and nuanced understanding of human values.
The department's faculty consists of accomplished scholars who make significant contributions to philosophical research and discourse at both national and international levels.
