The Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) in Art Studio represents the highest academic qualification for studio artists and serves as the standard credential for teaching at most colleges and universities. Beyond preparing graduates for academic roles, the M.F.A. equips them with professional skills for careers in commercial art or as independent fine artists. The program fosters exploration across diverse artistic mediums or focused specialization, guided by each student's creative research. With intentionally limited enrollment, we provide financial support to most M.F.A. students throughout their studies. The curriculum blends intensive studio practice with theoretical seminars and critique-based workshops, while our visiting artist program connects students with globally renowned artists and scholars. Successful candidates actively engage in critical discourse about contemporary art while participating in Lexington/Louisville's vibrant art community.

A brief letter stating your goals for graduate study and your interest in being considered for an assistantship, fellowship, and/or internship.
Portfolio
The application for a Master's in Fine Arts (MFA) requires that the applicant upload an electronic portfolio of 20 recent artworks sent as a PDF with an image key with title, date, size, and medium for each submitted work as part of that document. (Maximum resolution 8 x 10 x 72 dpi - NO PowerPoint presentations). Time-based materials on DVD (QuickTime or DVD with menus - 10 minutes max) should be sent to the Graduate Advisor (207 Fine Arts, School of Art & Visual Studies, University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY 40506-0022) by January 6. Web address with same materials, as a back up if the CD/DVD fails, will be considered. This may be uploaded as one document under Writing Sample.
Three letters of recommendation
For the Graduate School, the minimum acceptable TOEFL score is 550 (paper-based) 213 (computer-based), or 79 (internet-based). The minimum IELTS score is 6.5
An overall grade point average of 2.75 on undergraduate work and 3.00 on all graduate work is required by the Graduate School.
