Writing Sample
One sample of a music paper of a social, historical, ethnographic, or analytical (music theory) nature is required. An undergraduate term paper is acceptable. The paper should incorporate some analysis of form, harmony, or other organizational aspects of a piece of music. The paper should be at least 5 pages in length, 12-point font (Times or Times New Roman preferred), and should include bibliographical and footnote or endnote citations. We are interested in seeing your very best work.
On-campus interview and entrance exam
Candidates should prepare to come to campus and interview with faculty and also take the music theory and music history entrance exam. Interviews should be arranged with the Division Coordinator of Musicology and Ethnomusicology and the entrance exam should be scheduled with the Director of Graduate Studies in the School of Music. These interviews often take place around the scheduled entrance exam dates in January and February.

Three letters of recommendation For the Graduate School, the minimum acceptable TOEFL score is 550 (paper-based) 213 (computer-based), or 79 (internet-based). The minimum IELTS score is 6.5
An overall grade point average of 2.75 on undergraduate work and 3.00 on all graduate work is required by the Graduate School.
