The University of Kentucky offers robust academic programs covering algebra, analysis/partial differential equations, applied mathematics, combinatorics, numerical analysis, and topology. Our curriculum provides students with a comprehensive foundation to thrive in academic, industrial, or governmental careers. While maintaining rigorous standards, we foster a welcoming environment that promotes close faculty-student collaboration. Students can enhance their research, educational, or professional prospects through various opportunities, such as presenting at departmental seminars—including the Graduate Student Colloquium organized by the Graduate Student Council—and attending conferences at regional, national, and international levels. Additionally, students gain teaching experience across diverse courses and participate in specialized instructional and outreach initiatives. Our mission is to cultivate excellence in mathematical research and education, shaping well-rounded leaders in the discipline.
The Mathematics Department awards M.A., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees. While no strict prerequisites exist for admission, we recommend two semesters of advanced calculus plus at least one semester each of algebra and topology. Both the M.A. and M.S. degrees require 30 credit hours, available under Plan A or Plan B. The Master of Arts program, centered on mathematical structures, prepares students for community college teaching or doctoral studies. The Master of Science program emphasizes applied mathematics and computational skills, catering to careers in business, industry, and government sectors.
