The UK theory and composition faculty consists of five dedicated full-time members who are actively involved in creative work and scholarly research, specializing in areas including popular music scholarship, teaching methodologies, Schenkerian analysis, Romantic-era music, and original commissioned pieces. The University of Kentucky provides both PhD and MA programs in music theory. With intentionally limited enrollment, our program fosters close faculty-student interaction, ensuring graduates are thoroughly equipped for professional success or advanced academic pursuits. Recognized globally for its outstanding achievements in musical performance, pedagogy, and scholarly inquiry, the UK School of Music has shaped musicians' careers for over a century, preparing them as performers, teachers, scholars, and leaders across various musical and non-musical professions. Over 400 students enjoy exceptional instruction and diverse academic opportunities within a premier university setting. They gain valuable experience through participation in acclaimed ensembles—ranging from symphony orchestras to choral groups to the renowned Wildcat Marching Band—that perform nationally and internationally.
