Textiles are woven into our daily existence through clothing, furnishings, decorations, and artistic creations. This versatile medium bridges ancient traditions with modern innovation, combining technical skill with conceptual depth and creative expression. Within Fiber studies, every method, material, and approach carries its own distinctive narrative. At SA/VS, we foster a cross-disciplinary sculptural approach incorporating weaving, knitting, felting, sewing, embroidery, and dyeing techniques, where students manually construct textile layers while discovering diverse fiber manipulation possibilities. Contemporary fiber artistry merges time-honored craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology. Our curriculum explores significant themes that both motivate and shape classroom instruction. Learners delve into fiber's rich heritage to enrich their artistic approach and spark project ideas. From day one, students engage in hands-on work, mastering fundamental skills like looping, knotting, and fabric dyeing. They investigate various materials, studying textile properties and experimenting with their structural limits. Using looms and sewing machines, students produce technically sophisticated, intellectually engaging artworks suitable for gallery exhibitions.
