Both the BA and BGS degrees share identical coursework requirements within the major, integrating concepts from psychology, biology, linguistics, anatomy, and physiology. Additionally, students must complete humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences courses. While the BA mandates specific writing, math, foreign language, and lab science requirements, the BGS offers flexibility to pursue another discipline by completing two certificates, a minor, or a co/double major. Both degrees require at least 35 credit hours in Speech-Language-Hearing courses for the major. The department also provides minor and certificate options for students interested in communication-related careers.
Undergraduates have opportunities to engage in cutting-edge interdisciplinary research, studying topics like the neural basis of speech for brain-machine interfaces, improving cochlear implant technology, language genetics, word acquisition processes, human speech perception, and communication development in children with significant developmental challenges.
The clinical faculty are recognized innovators at state and national levels, pioneering approaches like culturally-sensitive care for Native American populations, inclusive school-based speech therapy methods, and delivering speech-language interventions in home and community environments.
