Understanding German language and culture equips students with valuable linguistic and intercultural skills for engaging effectively in our globalized society. As the most commonly spoken language in the EU and an official tongue in six central European nations, German maintains significant importance. The U.S. shares crucial economic, political, security, and cultural connections with German-speaking regions, with approximately 50 million Americans tracing their heritage to German roots.
Our curriculum offers a rigorous, multifaceted program covering not just language acquisition but also examining literature, arts, history, commerce, and political systems. We emphasize interdisciplinary adaptability, diverse extracurricular options, and tailored academic guidance. Students develop essential research capabilities for investigating topics within our discipline. Numerous majors and minors pursue summer, semester, or year-long study abroad experiences, frequently with departmental funding, while others secure internships in Germany. All learners can access KU's exceptional resources like the Spencer Museum of Art, university libraries, Max Kade Center for German-American Studies, Study Abroad Office, and Undergraduate Research Center. Many complement their German Studies with second majors or minors in areas including Global & International Studies, History, Business, Environmental Science, Music, Microbiology, and Language Studies.
