The MA program is ideal for students seeking graduate-level English education, including those with undergraduate degrees in other fields or planning to pursue a PhD elsewhere. Those aiming for careers in book-related professions (such as professional writing, editing, web design, or publishing) may consider the MA as their final degree, along with educators looking to strengthen their qualifications or learners pursuing personal intellectual development.
Both the MA and PhD in English-Literary Studies are conferred by the Graduate College, with instruction provided through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The MA program offers thesis and non-thesis options. Alumni from our BA, MA, MFA, and PhD programs have made significant impacts across education, arts, business, nonprofits, and government—applying the critical thinking, empathy, and communication skills honed through their English studies to shape their communities.
Our accomplished faculty bring varied expertise, and the English Department's curriculum enables deep engagement with diverse cultures, historical periods, and interdisciplinary connections. With such stimulating academic opportunities, our students cultivate a passion for lifelong learning, continually expanding and sharing knowledge well beyond their university years.
