The International Studies Program at the University of Iowa provides an interdisciplinary perspective on global affairs and worldwide relationships. Participants in this program discover that today's intricate global landscape demands a multifaceted understanding of international challenges and connections. The curriculum includes foundational international studies classes that teach essential theories and applicable abilities, supplemented by diverse globally-oriented courses across social sciences, humanities, and arts disciplines. The program actively promotes practical intercultural development through study abroad opportunities, local international community involvement, internships, service learning initiatives, and research projects. These academic and experiential components equip students to make meaningful global impacts.
Students benefit from close faculty interaction. Each participant receives guidance from a faculty advisor aligned with their academic interests, offering support for specialized projects or honors theses. Alumni have leveraged their comprehensive cross-cultural education to earn distinguished honors including Fulbright Teaching Awards, Gilman Scholarships, Princeton in Latin America Fellowships, and Critical Language Scholarships.
Students must meet the following requirements for admission: completion of academic upper secondary school (generally a total of 12-13 years of primary and secondary education); a corresponding secondary school diploma or leaving certificate; completion of minimum high school course requirements of the following: 4 years of English/language arts; 2 years in a single language of world languages; 3 years including courses in physical science, biology, chemistry, environmental science and physics of natural science; 3 years of social studies; 2 years of algebra; and 1 year of geometry.
