Students explore significant literary movements and genres across British, American, and international English-language literature, gaining insight into literature's multifaceted nature and its global creation and distribution. The University of Iowa holds national prominence as a hub for writing, with prestigious programs like the Iowa Writers' Workshop and International Writing Program attracting celebrated authors. In 2008, UNESCO honored Iowa City as the world's third City of Literature.
English majors develop expertise in analytical reading, literary critique, creative composition, historical investigation, and thoughtful discourse. Our distinguished writing programs guide students in discovering their unique voice while examining literature's profound impact on cultural values and human experiences throughout history and across regions.
With approximately 800 students, English remains among Iowa's most sought-after majors, yet maintains intimate class sizes that foster dynamic discussions and provide numerous chances for collaborative research and writing initiatives with faculty mentors.
Students must meet the following requirements for admission: completion of academic upper secondary school (generally a total of 12-13 years of primary and secondary education); a corresponding secondary school diploma or leaving certificate; completion of minimum high school course requirements of the following: 4 years of English/language arts; 2 years in a single language of world languages; 3 years including courses in physical science, biology, chemistry, environmental science and physics of natural science; 3 years of social studies; 2 years of algebra; and 1 year of geometry.
