The Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling with an Art Therapy specialization holds accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org), as endorsed by The Accreditation Council for Art Therapy Education.
This art therapy program educates students in utilizing artistic creation to promote physical, psychological, and emotional wellness across all age groups. The curriculum develops proficient entry-level Art Therapists by focusing on three key learning areas: cognitive understanding, practical skills, and professional attitudes. Designed for dual certification, the program enables graduates to qualify for mental health counselor licensure and art therapist registration. Applicants must complete 18 studio art credits and 12 psychology credits, including courses in abnormal and developmental psychology.
Spanning 63 credits, the MA in Mental Health Counseling - Art Therapy can be finished within two years (5-6 semesters, including summer terms). The program requires a 100-hour practicum and 600-hour internship, with an optional 300-hour advanced internship available for additional experience.
