Welcome to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's Department of Urban and Regional Planning (DURP). We're thrilled you're exploring our Master of Science in Sustainable Urban Management (MSSUM) program. The 21st century has become the urban century, with cities experiencing unprecedented population growth worldwide. This rapid urbanization creates an urgent demand for skilled professionals capable of addressing complex urban challenges. While cities represent hubs of economic opportunity and social progress, they also contribute significantly to resource depletion and environmental strain. Urban areas present a paradox - their concentrated land use and energy demands can harm ecosystems, yet their density and efficient design offer solutions to environmental concerns. Effective urban management lies at the heart of balancing these competing demands. Our program prepares professionals working across government sectors, urban-focused nonprofits, and infrastructure firms to tackle the critical task of managing urban expansion while promoting economic vitality, environmental sustainability, and social equity. The MSSUM curriculum equips mid-career professionals with advanced analytical and strategic capabilities to navigate urban transformation. Participants gain comprehensive understanding of interconnected urban systems and develop policy solutions for building sustainable, inclusive, and resilient communities. This intensive nine-month, full-time residential program enhances both practical skills and theoretical knowledge for urban practitioners.
With increasing urbanization comes both complex challenges and exciting possibilities for urban professionals. The MSSUM program develops the critical thinking and strategic planning abilities modern urban managers need. Our curriculum explores diverse perspectives on interconnected urban systems and evaluates policy approaches for fostering sustainable, secure, and adaptable communities.
