Students pursuing a Master of Music (MM) degree with specializations in Instrumental Conducting (Wind Band), Instrumental Conducting (Orchestra), or Choral Music will:
Hone their conducting abilities to an advanced professional standard, employing creative and analytical thinking to guide stylistic decisions and artistic interpretation while maintaining appropriate spontaneity, and will effectively share their artistry with varied audiences, while also mastering productive, musical, and time-efficient rehearsal methods.
Display competence in summarizing, integrating, and debating subject matter relevant to their primary field (including comprehensive familiarity with key repertoire), and effectively presenting their insights through appropriate academic formats in written, spoken, or performance-based mediums.
Show proficiency in employing suitable techniques for music-related academic research and scholarly writing, along with adeptness in utilizing both traditional and digital resources.
Apply refined analytical and interpretive skills in music theory, music history, or performance traditions, while effectively conveying sophisticated understanding of these concepts through written or oral communication.
Engage in focused studies to cultivate specialized knowledge and synthesize learning in areas that complement their core curriculum and/or career objectives.
Furthermore, select Illinois MM candidates will acquire practical experience and specialized knowledge in teaching methodologies, instructional techniques, and student evaluation within musical disciplines, while also developing understanding of ensemble rehearsal approaches and appropriate assessment methods for students.
