Students pursuing a Master's in Spanish must select between two specialization tracks: Spanish Linguistics or Spanish Literatures and Cultures. The Spanish Linguistics concentration, offered by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, delivers comprehensive graduate-level instruction across all key domains of Spanish linguistics. This program mandates studies in Spanish phonology, morphology, syntax, along with its historical development, sociolinguistic aspects, and second language acquisition processes.

Qualification Requirements

The normal prerequisite for a graduate major is an undergraduate major in the corresponding Romance language or consent of the department. Students doing graduate work for any advanced degree in Spanish or Portuguese must possess a command of the language. TOEFL must score at least 88 on the internet-based test (iBT), they must also pass the speaking sub-section of the iBT with a minimum score of 24. A grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (A=4.0), or comparable GPA for an international applicant, for last two years of undergraduate study is a minimum requirement for admission.
