The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures provides graduate studies culminating in Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in German. Students can pursue supplementary specializations in Cultural Studies and Interpretive Research or focus on Medieval Studies. Those working toward a Ph.D. in German may also earn a Second Language Acquisition and Teacher Education certification (SLATE Certificate). Our institution provides German Studies programs at both the M.A. and Ph.D. levels, along with a combined 5-Year BA/MA option for University of Illinois undergraduates. Additionally, we offer Bachelor of Arts in Teaching and Master of Arts in Teaching degrees. The program accommodates aspiring academics as well as those targeting careers outside academia, with numerous success stories and an exceptional post-graduation employment rate in both sectors.
