Bioinformatics is a diverse field focused on uncovering biological insights by creating repositories, developing analytical tools, and applying computational methods to biological data. It combines computational, informatic, statistical, and mathematical approaches to process, interpret, and present biological information across all scales - from molecular interactions to ecosystem dynamics. The Bioinformatics specialization within the Informatics Ph.D. program cultivates students' academic growth and research capabilities in both theoretical and applied bioinformatics, enhancing our comprehension of biological systems in humans, model organisms, agricultural species, and medically or economically significant microbes. This specialization includes interdisciplinary studies covering omics fields (genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, comparative omics), evolutionary studies (phylogenetics, molecular evolution), computational biology (statistical genetics, systems biology), structural biology, biological text analysis, and digital research methodologies.
