The History Department provides graduate programs culminating in a Ph.D., with full information available in the Graduate Studies portion of their website. Typically, students aren't accepted solely for a master's degree. Under special conditions, British history students may replace second language requirements with quantitative skills courses. For preliminary exams, students generally select three historical fields - one primary and two secondary. These must include at least one time/region-based field and one comparative/thematic field, with one pre-1815 period required. The selected fields must cover at least two geographic regions. One field may be from outside History or a custom-designed area approved by the advisor and examiners.
