The Department of Geography and Geographic Information Science (GGIS) at the University of Illinois provides graduate studies culminating in Master's and Ph.D. degrees in Geography with a focus on Geographic Information Science (GIScience). This program explores the generation, interpretation, and application of digital geographic data for studying economic, ecological, physical, and social patterns across various spatial dimensions. Students may concentrate on either: (1) GIScience theory and techniques covering domains like geographic information systems, dynamic modeling, remote sensing, spatial analysis, and inter-regional modeling, or (2) implementing GIScience approaches in health, urban, physical, or environmental geography. Transformational shifts are occurring in how we handle, interpret, and simulate geographic data. The GIScience program investigates digital geographic data's fundamental characteristics, the analytical and modeling techniques for such information, and its significance for comprehending economic, environmental, and societal changes from local to global perspectives. We prioritize rigorous methodological education in GIScience as the basis for both understanding these transformations and creating novel analytical tools for future geographic data exploration. Additionally, students develop a nuanced understanding of GIScience's societal impacts and the capabilities and constraints of its technologies.
