Doctoral programs are designed to cultivate research scholars, with the Ph.D. degree granted to individuals who show the ability to advance knowledge. However, not all doctoral graduates pursue academic careers. The Communication Department's Ph.D. programs equip students for both higher education roles and other professions requiring deep expertise in communication theory and research. The department fosters research and teaching skills across key areas of human communication study, as previously outlined, without rigid specialization paths. Each Ph.D. student develops a personalized curriculum and research focus in collaboration with an advisor and planning committee.
