The Doctor of Philosophy program focuses exclusively on classical philology, demanding advanced proficiency in both Greek and Latin. Applicants qualify for the Ph.D. program after earning a master's degree in classics or an equivalent qualification. Following admission, students must complete a minimum of 64 extra graduate-level course credits. Advancement to Stage III necessitates successful completion of translation exams (Greek and Latin to English), examinations on Greek and Latin literary history, a specialized author assessment, and an oral preliminary exam covering the dissertation proposal.

Qualification Requirements

M.A. (or equivalent) in Classics with a minimum GPA of 3.25 in previous graduate work. We do not accept applicants lacking significant experience in Greek and Latin.103 total on the TOEFL iBT or 7 total on the IELTS. All applicants whose native language is not English must pass the speaking section of the TOEFL iBT with a minimum score of 24, or the speaking section of the IELTS with a minimum score of 8.
