The Psychology Major offers a comprehensive curriculum within a research-driven department. This program caters to students seeking a liberal arts education with a focus on psychology, as well as those preparing for graduate studies in psychology or related fields like medicine, law, social work, business, counseling, and human resources.
The University of Illinois boasts a rich legacy in psychology education. Historical records show psychology instruction began in 1890, when Dr. Charles De Garmo taught educational psychology under the Philosophy and Pedagogy Department before psychology became its own discipline. Professor William O. Krohn founded the campus's first Psychological Laboratory in 1892, and by 1893, Psychology became an independent department under his leadership, rapidly expanding in both scope and reputation.
