The University of Illinois School of Music considers diversity, equity, and inclusion fundamental principles that drive our pursuit of excellence. We adopt an expansive view of diversity that fosters mutual understanding and serves as a foundation for growth. Recognizing diversity as an asset, we deliberately nurture an inclusive environment in all aspects of our work as educators, staff members, and learners. Our commitment involves honoring differences, embracing varied viewpoints, and actively working to recognize, challenge, and address discrimination and inequality within our academic community and beyond. The undergraduate program emphasizes training educators for diverse elementary and secondary school environments, offering specialized instruction in instrumental, choral, general music, and technology-focused studies. Practical teaching opportunities are woven throughout the curriculum, allowing future educators to learn directly from seasoned music teachers in Urbana/Champaign schools and other locations. Program alumni go on to teach in both public and private institutions across the United States and around the world.
