The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) serves as a prominent hub for East Asian cultural and linguistic studies. Our program has educated numerous students who now pursue successful careers across diverse fields including academia, corporate sectors, financial services, government agencies, and creative industries. The undergraduate curriculum aims to provide foundational understanding of East Asian civilizations, develop strong language proficiency, cultivate interdisciplinary cultural literacy, and deliver specialized seminar-based research training. Managed by the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, these Major and Minor programs cater to students pursuing comprehensive liberal arts education while preparing for advanced academic work or East Asia-focused professions. Additionally, the Department provides a Teaching Certificate program specifically designed to qualify graduates for teaching Mandarin Chinese or Japanese in Illinois public schools.
