Students pursuing French studies explore language and culture through diverse approaches including literary analysis, critical theory, civilization studies, film, linguistics (both theoretical and applied), and technology-enhanced learning. The program also provides specialized teacher training in French. At Illinois, our French curriculum delivers an extensive program covering French linguistics, Francophone literature, cultural studies, and cinema, tailored to support both undergraduate and graduate academic and career objectives. Most classes are conducted entirely in French with limited enrollment, ensuring an immersive environment with personalized academic support. We facilitate study abroad opportunities, including short-term and semester-long programs in Paris and Arles for undergraduates, along with graduate exchange partnerships with institutions in France, Québec, and Belgium. Recognized as one of only 22 French Embassy Centers of Excellence in the U.S., our program also bridges academia and industry through a unique collaboration with Business Administration, allowing French majors to combine language studies with business coursework for enhanced career prospects.
