Germanic studies provides thorough instruction in all facets of German and Scandinavian languages while fostering deep cultural insights into these linguistic traditions. A German teaching specialization is also offered.
Our German Program delivers an extensive curriculum covering language, cultural studies, and linguistics to support your educational and career objectives. Alongside full-immersion German courses, we provide multiple English-taught classes that often satisfy General Education criteria. Students can participate in our Vienna study-abroad opportunity for undergraduates or our Greifswald university exchange for graduates. Through Illinois Abroad and Global Exchange, undergraduates may study elsewhere in German-speaking regions, while our graduate students frequently secure research fellowships at various academic institutions and libraries across Germany, Austria, and Scandinavia.
